scholarships for international students

Scholarships for international students are an excellent way to finance your education in the US. These awards may be merit-based or need-based, and competition for these scholarships can be fierce.

Before applying for any scholarship, always double-check with your university to make sure the opportunity is available and suitable for you.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship program, launched in 2008 to attract top international students to Canadian universities, is administered by three federal research-granting agencies: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

This scholarship program is open to Canadian and international students alike, offering $50,000 annually over three years.

To be eligible, applicants must hold a first doctoral degree and be nominated by a Canadian higher educational institution with a Vanier quota. To ensure your university has enough capacity to host Vanier scholars, it’s best to discuss your eligibility with faculty members or graduate coordinators prior to applying.

Candidates who have studied abroad at international universities are encouraged to submit an official transcript from the institution where they earned their undergraduate degree. Furthermore, they can include a 250-word summary explaining how their international credentials and equivalencies compare with Canadian credentials.

Candidates interested in applying should locate a nominating institution and complete an application package before the internal deadline listed on ResearchNet’s Vanier Canada Scholarship application portal. Nominating institutions will forward nominations for Vanier CGSs to appropriate federal research granting agencies according to their allocation of grants.
