Google is a technology company that offers numerous scholarships for students around the world. These awards range from $10,000 up to full tuition coverage.
Doodle for Google Contest
Google’s annual Doodle for Google contest provides K-12 students with an outlet to express their creativity and art skills by creating designs that celebrate holidays or other significant events. The competition, which has been running since 2008, is open to students from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
This year’s theme is “I’m Grateful for…” Students are challenged to create a Google Doodle that expresses their appreciation and uses both real materials such as crayons, paint or clay, along with digital art.
The winning student’s work will be showcased on Google homepage for one day and they’ll also receive a $30,000 college scholarship. High school students who qualify can also claim an additional $50,000 technology grant to use at their school.
Participants must adhere to the official contest rules and submit an online entry form, Google Doodle artwork and supporting statement. Please include your contact information such as name, address, age, school, email and phone number in this submission.
Entries will be judged by a team of Google employees and the winner selected from five national finalists. The announcement of the finalist will take place in June.
State and territory winners are eligible for a $5,000 scholarship, trip to Google headquarters in California, Google hardware, as well as fun swag. Their doodles will be showcased on the Doodle for Google gallery, while their schools will host assemblies to celebrate their accomplishments.
Students must adhere to the official contest rules and abide by all applicable federal, state, local and territorial laws and regulations throughout the contest period. Any violations of these rules may result in disqualification from the Contest.
Additionally, the winner’s doodle and supporting statement must not incite hatred or harm against any group or individual, be derogatory, offensive, threatening, defamatory, disparaging, libelous or contain content which is inappropriate, indecent, sexually explicit, profane tortious slanderous or contrary to the spirit or theme of the Contest. At the Sponsor’s sole discretion any entries not meeting these requirements will be disqualified.
Google App Inventor Contest
App Inventor is an online platform that empowers students as young as six to learn how to code. It features an intuitive drag-and-drop coding style and provides comprehensive tutorial guidance. Plus, App Inventor is free and hosted by MIT – making it the perfect learning resource!
The Google App Inventor Contest is a contest that encourages students to design and develop apps using App Inventor. The winner will receive a Google Nexus 7 Tablet, while the second prize is an App Inventor book.
App Inventor, created by MIT in collaboration with Google, has been dubbed “the greatest thing to happen to programming since Basic.” It provides students with a fun and straightforward way to learn the fundamentals of coding while creating useful applications that enhance their lives as well as those of others.
At its inception, MIT Professor Hal Abelson and Mark Friedman created App Inventor as a way for younger learners to explore mobile app development without needing extensive knowledge of system-level or embedded programming. By integrating open-source block coding (Roque, 2007) with Android APIs and Java syntax, App Inventor allows students to construct apps that run on mobile devices similarly to native applications using visual programming techniques.
App Inventor has become a go-to platform with more than 6 million users worldwide, providing an invaluable teaching resource for programming. It teaches various skillsets such as computational thinking and game design to engineering and robotics.
Since 2010, the App Inventor team has collaborated with hundreds of schools and teachers around the world. In addition to hosting their contest, they also host workshops and training sessions for educators.
For instance, the App Inventor Foundation led a three-day workshop for high school girls in Mexico who used the platform to create an app that tracked their carbon footprint. The venture was deemed successful and the girls were invited to present their work at the White House.
In the App Inventor Gallery, there is an App of the Month contest that encourages users to create applications based on a given theme. This program has proved highly successful at motivating users to share their apps with others and receive constructive criticism from an experienced panel of judges.
Google Conference and Travel Scholarships
Google Conference and Travel Scholarships provide financial support to students who wish to attend conferences across different countries related to tech industry. The scholarships are available both to Indian as well as international students.
These awards aim to break down barriers that prevent certain groups from participating in technology and major conferences. They are given to women working in technology, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, persons with disabilities and women who have conducted a paper at one of the top-tier computer science conferences.
These grants offer students financial assistance for air tickets and lodging costs (up to 3,000 USD) associated with attending an international conference. The grant can be claimed through regular university procedures.
In addition to funding, participants will also gain access to learning materials, mentorship and the Google community. For instance, Women in Product is an inclusive global network of women working across product management, design and user research roles who host events, assist each other with jobs search strategies, provide and receive mentorship – helping each other become stronger together!
The Women Techmakers Scholars Program offers financial support to a select number of women techmakers across North America, Europe, India and Africa. These fellows will have the chance to attend the annual Women Techmakers Scholars Retreat as well as take advantage of various trainings, workshops and networking events with mentors.
These scholarships are presented to participants who possess an impressive academic and/or professional record, along with demonstrated leadership potential. These opportunities are open to undergraduate or graduate students with a degree certificate who meet certain eligibility criteria.
To be eligible for these scholarship funds, an applicant must be a full-time student with a valid passport enrolled in an accredited college or university in India. Furthermore, they must have had their paper accepted at an esteemed computer science conference and be the primary author of said paper.
Google Accessibility Scholarship
Google has made numerous scholarships available to students with disabilities. These awards provide the tools and support that these students need in order to succeed in college.
The Google Accessibility Scholarship is a scholarship for students with disabilities interested in studying computer science or closely related technical fields. It aims to break down barriers that prevent these individuals from accessing computing, motivate them to excel academically, and serve as role models and leaders within the technology creation community.
This scholarship program is open to university students with disabilities studying computer science, engineering, informatics or a closely-related technical field at universities in Europe or Israel. The award is given directly to the student for use towards tuition and education-related expenses.
To be eligible, applicants must be full time students at their primary university for the 2022-2023 academic year and fulfill all other eligibility criteria. Once selected, recipients will receive instructions from Google on how to claim their award. Failure to complete these steps by the specified deadline will disqualify recipients from receiving financial assistance.
These scholarships are made possible through donations from the Google Foundation. All funds will go towards education-related projects that promote accessibility and inclusion.
Some of the projects funded include creating fully-funded Google Career Certificates through Leonard Cheshire in partnership with INCO to provide accessible pathways for people with disabilities into high-growth tech jobs; providing grant funding to Royal Mencap Society to deliver digital citizenship and online safety education for children with disabilities in the UK; and joining forces with Diversify Photo and Black Disabled Creatives to build public databases of underrepresented artists and innovators to amplifying their voices.
The Scholarship is made possible by donations from the Google Foundation, provided to Google with the understanding that these funds will be used for education-related projects that promote accessibility and inclusivity in the workplace. Those initiatives will be determined by Google’s Director of Accessibility and Disability Inclusion.
Google offers several scholarships for students with disabilities, such as the Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities and Google Lime Scholarship. This scholarship program is open to European students pursuing degrees in computer science or engineering who have a disability. Candidates are judged based on academic background, leadership qualities and demonstrated passion for computer science.
